Byron Bay is a well-known tourist destination with over one million visitors each year. There has been a high level of concern among the community and local businesses for some time about the level of alcohol-related incidents and anti-social behavior during peak holiday periods.
To help address these issues Byron Shire Council was the recipient of funding through the Australian Government’s Safer Streets Program for the installation of CCTV cameras in the Byron Bay CBD. The project will install improved lighting and CCTV cameras in identified hot spots in the Byron Bay central business district to help deter anti-social behaviour, reduce the fear of crime and improve public safety and the perception of safety in the area.
Proposed Camera Locations
The project will install improved lighting and closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras in Apex Park and parts of Jonson Street in the Byron Bay central business district (CBD).
Below is a map of the proposed camera locations with the anticipated cameras installed by the end of November 2015.
